Gatsby Benchmarks

The Gatsby Careers Benchmarks are a framework for world-class careers provision in education. They set out what schools and colleges need to do to ensure that all students have the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed choices about their future.

There are eight Gatsby Benchmarks:

  1. A stable careers programme

  2. Learning from careers and labour market information

  3. Addressing the needs of each student

  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers

  5. Encounters with employers and employees

  6. Experiences of workplaces

  7. Encounters with further and higher education

  8. Personal guidance

To achieve the Gatsby Careers Benchmarks, schools and colleges need to:

  • Have a clear vision for careers education and guidance

  • Provide a well-resourced and well-supported careers programme

  • Collect and use data to monitor and improve their careers provision

  • Work in partnership with employers, education providers and other stakeholders

  • Ensure that all students have access to high-quality careers guidance

Here are some specific things that schools/colleges can do to achieve the Gatsby Careers Benchmarks:

  • Create a whole-school approach to careers education and guidance, with buy-in from all staff.

  • Ensure that all staff are knowledgeable about careers and are able to provide students with accurate and up-to-date information.

  • Provide opportunities for students to learn about different careers, such as through work experience, visits to workplaces, and careers talks.

  • Offer personal guidance to students, helping them to explore their interests, skills and values, and make informed choices about their future.

  • Work with employers to provide students with insights into the world of work.

  • Use data to monitor the impact of their careers provision and identify areas for improvement.

The Gatsby Careers Benchmarks are a challenging but achievable goal. By working together, schools and colleges can ensure that all students have the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed choices about their future.
